La inspiración
This month’s story is inspired by the movie Wild Tales or Relatos Salvajes. At least the first scene in the movie, which was kind of silly / tongue in cheek.
My Spanish learning has been rooted in a lot of Venezuelan slang, so this month’s story is chalked full of it. Keep in mind if you translate directly it could be kind of vulgar but, that’s just the way it is. !Así es!
Hope you enjoy.
Meter La Pata
“Si compras esto no voy esta noche." Marina cruzó los brazos y con una mueca ácida, miró a Paulo, su novio durante cinco largos y arduos años.
Paulo se mofó y recogió la lata de tomates. “¿En serio Marina, o es una de tus vainas de Tik Tok?”
"Sabes que no puedo comer tomate enlatado." Ella dijo.
"No puedes comer nada.”
“No seas pendejo. Entonces, no voy esta noche. Olvídalo.” Marina estaba furiosa y pensaba “!Qué arrachera lo odio, quiero matar a ese carajo!”
Ella comenzó a alejarse y Paulo la siguió con el carrito. “¿Por el tomate o porque odias a mi mamá?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tenía un mal presentimiento cuando Rebeca entró en el supermercado para trabajar.
Pensó que fue porque la luz era más brillante que antes, o porque el ruido de los pies era más fuerte, o porque había una pareja discutiendo en el pasillo de productos, no estaba segura.
Es posible que estuviera enferma. Un dolor de cabeza. O tal vez, ella estaba simplemente nerviosa, porque esa tarde después de su trabajo, tenía una cita secreta para obtener documentos ilegales para su nueva identidad. Una cita muy importante, la más importante de su vida.
De cualquier manera, fue un día distinto a otro.
Todo lo que tenía que hacer era terminar su turno sin ningún problema. Sería fácil, hasta ahora, después de tres meses nadie se había dado cuenta de que no hablaba español.
Solo lo suficiente para decir "Buenos días, su total es de $22. ¿Necesita una bolsa?"
Pero no lo suficiente para decir "Me fui de Estados Unidos para ir a Venezuela y nadie sabe que estoy huyendo de la ley".
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rebeca estaba tratando de ignorar a la pareja enojada pero no pudo evitar notar el vapor que salía de los oídos de la chica. El tipo, sin embargo, parecía perfectamente tranquilo mientras descargaba el carrito.
“Hola linda, ¿Cómo estás hoy?" El tipo le sonrió a Rebeca.
“Bien, gracias, ¿Y usted?” Rebeca respondió, esperando que la conversación terminara allí.
“Nunca he estado mejor.” El dijo.
Rebeca miró a la chica que fumaba en silencio.
“Vamos a comer sopa de tomate esta noche con mi mamá.” Él continuó.
“Que bueno.” Rebeca asintió incómodamente. “Su total es de $37. ¿Necesita una bolsa?”
“¿Te gusta la sopa de tomate?” El preguntó.
“Claro…” Rebeca respondió, sin estar segura de lo que estaba pasando.
“Callate Paulo por favor.” Marina gritó.
“A nosotros también.” Paulo dijo a Rebeca. “Especialmente a mi novia Marina."
En ese momento se escucharon gritos desde el frente de la tienda. Rebeca se dio la vuelta para ver a un hombre vestido de negro de pies a cabeza, agitando una pistola.
“TODOS EN EL PISO AHORA.” El hombre gritó.
“!Qué mierda es esta!” Dijo Paulo.
“¡Al suelo Paulo!” Marina lo empujó al suelo pero no cayó.
Rebeca se quedó quieta cuando el ladrón se acercó a ella. ¡Tenía que suceder esto justo el día de su cita! ¡Qué mala pata!
El ladrón le gritó a Rebeca, “Dame todo el dinero. ¡Todo el dinero ya!"
“No hay problema." Rebeca respondió. Incluso en español entendió el significado de 'dame todo el dinero.’
El ladrón se volvió hacia Paulo, “¿Por qué no estás en el suelo?"
“¿Qué te pasa pana, no tienes plata? ¿Estás pelando bola?” Paulo respondió.
“Ah, ya entiendo, eres un jodedor comemierda. Bueno. ¿Qué te parece esto?” El ladrón agarró una lata de tomates y se la arrojó a los pies de Paulo. Paulo gritó y se cayó al suelo.
Mientras tanto, Rebeca estaba recogiendo todo el dinero, pero no era mucho. Menos de cien dólares.
“¿Eso es todo? No lo creo.” El ladrón dijo con enojo.
“Eso es todo. Lo siento.” Dijo Rebeca. “¿Quieres una bolsa?
De repente Marina habló desde el suelo, “Un momento…¡Yo te conozco chamo! Reconozco tu voz. Estas ‘Cascabel Venezuela’, de Tik Tok.” Se puso de pie. “Me encantan tus videos. ¡Soy tu fan!”
Paulo, todavía agarrado a su pie de dolor, gritó “¡Maldita sea Marina! ¿Estás drogada?"
Marina tomó su teléfono, "Por favor, ¿Podemos tomarnos un selfie?”
"¡Claro que no! ¿Estás loca?” El ladrón hizo un gesto a su arma. “Estoy ocupado chama. ¿No lo ves?”
Las sirenas se escuchaban en la distancia.
"¡Mierda!" El ladrón agarró la bolsa y corrió hacia la puerta.
"¡Espérame!" Marina corrió hacia él. "¿Estás tomando un video de esto? Por favor, yo también quiero ser famosa.”
Rebeca observó cómo el ladrón corría por el estacionamiento y Marina iba justo detrás.
Todavía con dolor, Paulo la miró a Rebeca, “Pues. Supongo que somos solo tú y yo. ¿Quieres venir a cenar esta noche?”
Justo entonces Rebeca vio los coches de policía, se dio la vuelta y corrió, golpeando accidentalmente otra lata de tomates en el otro pie de Paulo.
“Lo siento” Rebeca gritó mientras Paulo gritaba de dolor de nuevo, “¡No puedo hablar con la policía!”
English Version
“If you buy that, I’m not going to your mother’s tonight.” Marina crossed her arms and with an acidic expression, looked at Paolo, her boyfriend of five long and arduous years.
Paolo scoffed as he grabbed the tomato can. “Seriously Marina, or is this some stupid shit you got from Tik Tok?”
“You know I don’t eat canned tomatoes.” She said.
“You can’t eat anything.” He responded with a smile, as he dropped it into the cart.
“Yes, actually, I eat almost everything, except canned tomatoes.” Marina was young, her long dress was a brilliant yellow like the sun. But there was no denying the lines of stress forming on her face. Lines from Paolo.
On the other hand, Paolo never looked better. “You ate salad with tomatoes last night, remember?”
“That’s different,” she said. “That was fresh tomato. I can’t eat warmed up tomatoes.”
Now they were arguing in the aisle, frozen in time, not paying any attention to the other shoppers watching them.
“You need to cook tomatoes in order to make soup. Or don’t you know that?” Paolo grinned, which only made Marina angrier.
“I don’t want fucking tomato soup.” She was yelling now. “If you buy that, I’m not going. You said we were preparing chicken.”
“Yes, chicken with tomato soup.” He said.
“Don’t be an ass. So fine then, I’m not going. Forget about it.”
She started to walk away and Paolo followed with the cart. “Because of the tomatoes or because you hate my mother?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There was a bad feeling in the air when Rebecca walked into the supermarket to start her shift.
She thought maybe the lights were brighter, or the sound of people shuffling their feet was louder than normal, or maybe it was because of the couple arguing in the produce aisle, she wasn’t totally sure.
It’s possible she was sick, had a headache. Or maybe it was just nerves, because later that afternoon after work she had a secret meeting to obtain her illegal documents and a new identity. It was a very important meeting, the most important of her entire life.
Either way, it was a day unlike any other.
All she had to do was finish her shift without any issues. It should be easy, since even after three months nobody had realized that she didn’t speak Spanish.
She knew enough to say “Hi how are you, your total is $22, do you need a bag?”
But not enough to say “I escaped the United States to come to Venezuela and nobody knows I’m running from the law.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The couple waited in line with their shopping cart full of canned tomatoes and soup.
As if nothing was amiss, Paolo asked Marina, “Do you talk to somebody?”
“What?” Marina looked up from her phone.
“Do you talk to someone?” Paolo repeated as if the question was obvious.
“What are you saying?”
Paolo leaned in towards Marina and pointed to his head, “Do you talk to a psychiatrist?”
“What the fuck are you saying?” Marina’s face became red.
Paolo winked at her, “You should.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rebecca was trying to ignore the angry couple but she couldn’t help but notice the steam coming out of the girl’s ears. The dude however looked completely calm as he unloaded the cart.
“Hey darlin’, how are you doing?” He smiled at Rebecca.
“Fine thanks, and you?” She responded, hoping it would end there.
“Never been better.” He said.
Rebecca looked at the girl who was fuming in silence.
“We are going to eat tomato soup tonight with my mom.” He continued.
“Very nice.” Rebecca nodded uncomfortably. “Your total is $37. Do you need a bag?
“Do you like tomato soup?” He asked.
“Sure…” Rebecca responded, unsure of where this was going.
“Shut up Paolo, Jesus.” The girl yelled.
“Us too,” Paolo said to Rebecca. “Especially my girlfriend Marina.”
Suddenly screams could be heard from the front of the store. Rebecca turned around to see a man dressed head to toe in black, waving around a gun.
“EVERYBODY ON THE GROUND NOW.” The man shouted.
“What the fuck!” Said Paolo.
“Get on the ground Paolo!” Marina tried to grab him as she fell to the floor.
Rebecca stayed still as the thief came towards her. Of all the days, this had to happen today.
The thief yelled at Rebecca, “Give me all the money. All the money right now.”
“No problem,” She responded. Even in Spanish she understood the meaning of ‘give me all the money now.’
The thief turned to Paolo, “Why aren’t you on the ground?”
“Why don’t you have your own money? Are you some kind of peasant?” Paolo responded.
“Oh I see, you’re a troublemaker. Well what do you think of this?” He threw one of the tomato cans onto Paolo’s foot and Paolo fell to the floor yelling in pain.
Meanwhile Rebecca was gathering all of the money, but there wasn’t much. Less than a hundred dollars.
“That’s it? I don’t believe it.” The thief said angrily.
“That’s it. I’m sorry. Do you want a bag?”
Suddenly Marina spoke from the floor. “Wait a minute, I know you! I recognize your voice. You’re ‘Venezuelan Rattlesnake’ on Tik Tok.” She stood up. “I love your videos!”
Paolo, still holding his foot in pain yelled “Marina are you on drugs?”
Marina took out her phone, “Could we take a selfie?”
“Hell no!” The robber motioned to his gun. “Can’t you see I’m a little busy?”
Sirens could be heard in the distance.
“Shit.” The thief grabbed the bag and ran towards the door.
“Wait for me!” Marina ran after him. “Are you recording right now? I want to be in your video!”
Rebecca watched as the thief ran across the parking lot, Marina right behind him.
Still in pain Paolo looked up at Rebecca, “Well, looks like it’s just you and me. Want to come to dinner tonight?”
Just then Rebecca saw the police cars roll up. She turned and ran, accidentally knocking another can of tomatoes onto Paolo’s other foot.
“I’m sorry!” she shouted as Paolo cried out again in pain, “I can’t talk to the police!”
